From Joe Biden’s 6,850-square-foot mansion overlooking a pond in Wilmington, Delaware, to Mayor Peter Buttigieg’s twice-mortgaged fixer-upper in South Bend, Indiana, the homes of the Democratic nominees can tell us a lot about them.
With a record 24 candidates headed into this week’s debates, every extra bit of information to help understand and differentiate these individuals is worth noting.
To understand more about where the candidates call home, I evaluated and ranked the residences of ten top Democratic candidates, based on current aggregate polling figures. Ownership was confirmed using property records filed with local city or county assessors’ offices. Home price estimates are from Zillow and homes are ranked by their estimated value.
1. Senator Kamala Harris
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Estimated Home Value: $4.8 million
Smashing into the top spot is Senator Kamala Harris, who lives in a four-bedroom, 3,505-square-foot spread in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. An aerial view of the posh neighborhood reveals a pool in nearly every yard and even an outdoor basketball court at her neighbor’s house. Senator Harris lives with her husband – intellectual property lawyer, Doug Emhoff – who in addition to a trust bearing both their initials, is the official owner of the house. The couple reported $1.9 million in joint earnings last year.
2. Senator Elizabeth Warren
Hometown: Cambridge, Massachusetts
Estimated Home Value: $3.6 million
The price of Elizabeth Warren’s home has probably received more attention than any other candidate this year, with several publications criticizing her for railing against income inequality while owning a home they claim was worth as much as $5 million.
While I won’t touch the critiques, it’s worth noting that the official assessed value is decidedly lower, and Zillow estimates the home is worth $3.6 million. However the three-story Victorian is a sizable 3,728 square feet, and is a 15-minute walk from Harvard’s campus. Bought for $447,000 in 1995, Warren’s house has proven to be a fantastic real estate investment, appreciating by a whopping 705% (compared to a median home value growth of 215% in greater Boston during that same time period).
3. Mayor Bill de Blasio
Hometown: Brooklyn, New York
Estimated Home Value: $2.17 million
While Bill De Blasio currently spends his time in the luxe digs of Gracie Mansion, his longtime home in Park Slope, Brooklyn is already well known – as the current New York City Mayor made headlines when he put it up for rent for $5,000 per month back in 2014. The 1,248-square-foot home is modest in size compared to others on this list, though still quite sizable for living in New York City. Purchased in 2000 for $450,000, Bill De Blasio can take comfort in knowing even if he doesn’t land a new residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, his old house will do just fine.
4. Former Vice President Joe Biden
Hometown: Wilmington, Delaware
Estimated Home Value: $1.87 million
With 4.1 acres of land and 6,850 square feet overlooking a pond, it’s safe to say former Vice President Biden is living large. His house is shielded from the road via a ⅛ mile long driveway and contains a pool in the backyard. Interestingly, despite its size, the house has only three bedrooms and four bathrooms, meaning it’s possible Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden may do more hosting than living in their luxury Delaware home.
5. Senator Cory Booker
Hometown: Newark, New Jersey
Estimated Home Value: $435,377
When it comes to Senator Cory Booker’s Newark home, one detail appears to supersede all others: Does he actually live there? While the senator is on record as having lived in his current Newark address since 2013 (located in one of Newark’s “toughest neighborhoods,” according to his campaign communications director), opponents and even some locals have claimed he’s seldom seen there. While the 2,818-square-foot home has benefited greatly from the housing rebound—up an estimated 154% since Booker bought it in 2011—the issue of whether or not the senator is true to his Newark home base will likely remain a point of conversation.
6. Senator Bernie Sanders
Hometown: Burlington, Vermont
Estimated Home Value: $406,129
Much like his high-profile progressive colleague Elizabeth Warren, Senator Bernie Sanders has received criticism over the value of his home—or more specifically, homes. While the senator has owned his 2,353-square-foot, four-bedroom home in Burlington since 2009, he has been known to split his time between two other homes: one in Washington D.C. and the other, a lakefront property in nearby North Hero, Vermont. While $406,000 isn’t quite what everyone might consider lavish wealth (it’s about 27% higher than the median home price in Burlington), it appears the senator does well with his real estate.
7. Beto O’Rourke
Hometown: El Paso, Texas
Estimated Home Value: $397,893
Dubbed the “Williams House” after noted banker Joseph Williams, Beto O’Rourke’s pueblo-style home in the Sunset Heights neighborhood of El Paso is a character in itself. Announcing his presidential candidacy from an interview inside his home, O’Rourke was quick to boast of his home’s history as a meeting place between Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa and U.S. General Hugh Scott back in 1915. The stucco-walled, 4,656-square-foot home features five bedrooms, a wrap-around porch and sizable patio area.
8. Senator Amy Klobuchar
Hometown: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Estimated Home Value: $352,387
Amy Klobuchar is about as Minnesotan as they come. Born in Plymouth, Minnesota, she took a brief detour to Yale before returning to her home state to work as a private lawyer, and later became Minnesota’s first female senator. Her 2,205-square-foot home is located just across the river from downtown Minneapolis, in the Marcy Holmes neighborhood. At $352,387, Senator Klobuchar’s home is comfortably above the estimated Zillow median home value of $266,300 for the city.
9. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand
Hometown: Brunswick, New York
Estimated Home Value: $312,260
With five bedrooms, 3,436 square feet and a 2.65-acre lot for just over $300,000, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York has the best home size per dollar on this list. Benefiting from the relatively low home prices of the Albany Metro area (median home price there was $217,600, according to Zillow), Senator Gillibrand’s home is conveniently just a 20-minute drive from the state’s capital, where her offices are located. Purchased in 2011 for $335,000, Gillibrand’s home is the only one on this list which has decreased in value since purchase, likely due to the net migration out of New York state.
10. Mayor Pete Buttigieg
Hometown: South Bend, Indiana
Estimated Home Value: $242,515
Rounding out the list is Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, who when returning from the campaign trail, is welcomed into a 2,480-square-foot house just across the street from the St. Joseph River. Residing there with his husband and two dogs, Mayor Pete has shown some real estate savvy: his house has almost doubled in value since he bought the home for $125,000 in 2009 (he has done extensive renovation).
