Owners excavated forty feet of cliffside to build the addition to the house

As San Francisco’s property market continues with a slowdown, there are certain highly coveted pockets of land still riding a bullish wave. Sea Cliff, home to the likes of Marc Benioff and Jack Dorsey, sits in small northern corner of the city and has long been a destination for homebuyers with the highest price tags in mind. Other famous names who have called these streets home are: George Soros, Don and Doris Fisher, Tom Steyer, as well as several Hollywood names such as Robin Williams, Sharon Stone, Cheech Marin and Eugene Levy.
At the very far edge of the neighborhood are two dozen homes directly on the cliff—including this dramatically positioned four-bed, 6.5 bath house listed for $25 million. The whole home is 10,000 square feet of interior space, with an extra 2,000 square feet of outdoor terraces.
The sellers gave the home a complete renovation in 1999, including excavating over 40 feet of the cliffside so they could have features such as the outdoor terrace with infinity pool directly off of an indoor basketball court. The glass for the wall between the basketball court and the pool terrace was imported from Italy. As the photo below shows, the Golden Gate Bridge is visible in the distance.

Property records show the highest-priced sale on record for the neighborhood is $18 million, with a handful of other top-of-market homes selling for between ten and seventeen million. Listing agent Neal Ward says the high asking price for this home is reflective of how exclusive the property is. Homes on the cliff rarely come on the market and, referring to the limitations of land space, Ward adds, “That’s it. There will never be any more homes on the Cliff.”
Ward goes on to explain the San Francisco housing market trends are more applicable to townhouses and condos. “We have a really limited supply of single family homes. It’s a teeny tiny piece of geography. In the single family home market, we’re not seen a huge discount. We’re seeing slight discounts,” says Ward.

This house has an interior with finishes that follow an Italianate style. As the formal dining room shows the marble fireplace surround matching the same profile as the wall of windows.
The winding staircase with brass rail in the foyer was part of the major renovation.

A look at the property from above shows the ample outdoor space and, at the very far right of the picture, the privacy wall facing the street is visible. According to Ward it is about seven feet high and keeps the home safe from onlookers.
