Villa Brise de Mer, an uber-private estate in the British Virgin Islands that’s only reachable via boat, seaplane or helicopter and that’s across the water from Sir Richard Branson’s fabled Necker Island, is going on the auction block Jan. 5 for a minimum price of US$3 million.
The estate, whose French name means Sea Breeze, will be sold in a 48-hour online auction by Interluxe, Luxury Property Auction Marketplace in partnership with the current listing agent, Jaime Rae Turnbull of Higbie Maxon Agney.
Michigan philanthropists Gwen and Steven Bearden, the sellers, bought the original lot and built the custom house.
“It was the kind welcome we received from the British Virgin Island people and natural beauty of the region that attracted us to Virgin Gorda,” the couple.
The Beardens said the sale of the villa will allow them to spend more time on their charity work through The Ted and Jane Von Voigtlander Foundation they established in 2006 to focus on children, women, families, education, animals and pets and the environment, nutrition and health.
In 2006, the Beardens made headlines when the foundation donated $15 million to theUniversity of Michigan Health System to aid in the construction of the Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital. According to published reports, it was the largest gift ever made to the health system earmarked for women’s health.
The villa was originally listed in 2016 for $12 million after construction was completed, according to Ms. Turnbull, who said that the estate had been off the market at one point and that the price had been later reduced to $8 million.
Ms. Turnbull said the auction process will open the sale “to a large database of qualified buyers from all over the world.”
Perched on a promontory on the island of Virgin Gorda in the Oil Nut Bay resort community, Villa Brise de Mer, which is set on nearly an acre, overlooks a private white-sand beach and the turquoise waters of the Caribbean.
The four-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom house, which covers 4,778 square feet, opens up to 2,152 square feet of verandahs and cascading side terraces that include a cliff-side dining area and a lower-level private cliff-side yoga and relaxation pavilion.

The house, designed by Joseph Mosey Architecture of Northville, Michigan, offers the utmost privacy: It is invisible from the road.
“The property is custom beyond its representation in photographs,” Ms. Turnbull said “It was designed specifically to fit the lot. It has 180-degree breathtaking views of the Caribbean, Eustacia Sound and Necker Island.”
The villa, which features smart-home technology, is designed for entertaining: It has three infinity-edge pools, an open-plan kitchen, and each of its three guest bedroom suites features a designer-tiled bathroom, a custom mahogany walk-in closet, a terrace and plunge-pool access.
Details and materials, which include antique French doors, custom Andiroba mahogany, cabinetry and ceilings from Nicaragua, Peruvian travertine and a Wallaba hardwood roof, were sourced from all over the world, according to the listing.
Villa Brise de Mer is one of only 88 home sites in the 300-acre community of Oil Nut Bay, on the eastern end of Virgin Gorda. The community’s amenities include several restaurants, a spa and wellness center, a children’s clubhouse and nature center, a beach club, 24/7 concierge services, a clubhouse, a helipad, a marina and a public dock and tennis courts.
