The founder of the Discovery Channel, John Hendricks, and his wife Maureen bought the first parcel of what would become an expansive holding of 8,700 acres in the 1990s and have since turned the entire property into a working resort, ranch and luxury car museum. Two years ago they listed just the main ranch for sale with an asking price of $149 million, but earlier this month put the entire property, resort included, on the market for $279 million, as the Wall Street Journal reported. This makes it one of the most expensive properties currently on the market in the country and certainly would break price records for the area if it sold for the full asking price.
The many perks that come with the package include an airplane hangar (with grass airstrip), two helipads, swimming pool, an observatory with copper dome that rotates and opens to the skies. The on-site car museum holds Hendrick’s personal car collection and is open to the public. Two of the vehicles will convey with the sale—a 1929 Duesenberg and 1906 Cadillac. The resort itself, called Gateway Canyons, has several lodges with dozens of suites as well as 14 casitas, five restaurants and facilities for business conferences.
The 22,000 square foot main house uses geothermal heating and cooling to climate control the many bedrooms and bathrooms. All told, the various buildings in the private buildings have 14 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms. Many of the furnishings convey with the sale.
As the photo above shows, the home makes use of several design themes. Stained glass windows complement the Pueblo style exterior. While rustic accent pieces, such as the custom made doors to the living room, bring in the wild west feel. The property is mostly inside the Colorado border in Mesa County, but a portion of the land is within the confines of Grand County, Utah.
