More Over-The-Top Perks Revealed For The $280 Million Listing Owned By Discovery Channel Founder John Hendricks

There’s a car that shouldn’t exist. An outcropping of rock that pre-dates all of life on Earth. And dinosaur fossils both on display in a fancy showroom and embedded in the rocks and mountains. That is just the tip of the pre-Cambrian iceberg when it comes to this nearly 9,000 acre parcel in southwest Colorado. Discovery Channel founder John Hendricks first listed the main house and grounds of this property a few years ago for $149 million, but has since added the entirety of the expanse (including the 172-room hotel and resort) to the sale for a total price of $279 million.

Ryan Serhant, one of the stars of Bravo TV’s Million Dollar Listing and author of the book Sell It Like Serhant is the mastermind behind the marketing for this property and this week gave me a first look at the video tour of the utterly unique amenities that come with the place, many of which are being reported here for the first time. They range from the small but bizarre–such as the decorative dinosaur dung that has been fossilized and embedded in the stained glass of the one-of–a-door in the main house—to the large and totally normal if you’re talking about a property like this. That would be the helicopter valued at $3 million, plus the full-time helicopter pilot and mechanic so you have someone who knows how the work the thing.

The main house on the property is a 22,000 square foot home built in an adobe style architecture, but comes with interior marble columns, stone-circled dome skylights and an interior fountain for its own decorative flair (as pictured below). The asking price for the property includes several house staff, who have a place to stay in any of the guest houses that are on the grounds. The four-floor elevator, infinity pool and movie theater also come with the main house. A select number of horses (with stables) and a herd of eight buffalo are included too.

The land is home to a working resort called Gateway Canyons Ranches & Resort and provides outdoor activities along the lines of a shooting range, Baja racetrack, fishing pond and hiking trails. The hotel and separate casitas, plus 130-person staff all come with the purchase. There are also plenty of indoor amenities including two restaurants, bars, health spa, three pools, amphitheater, event center, planetarium, fossil room and car museum with over 50 vintage cars that follow the history of the automotive from its early beginnings. The cars are collectively valued at over $55 million and are included in the $279 million asking price.

About that car that shouldn’t exist. Of the 50+ cars that come with the car museum, one of them is a 1954 f88 by Ford that was only built to be a show car, having debuted at the 1954 General Motors Motorama tour. It was scheduled to be destroyed (as was common practice for many of their show cars once they had completed a tour) but legend has it that the car was smuggled out and began a stealth trip around the country—sometimes as a working vehicle and sometimes dismantled and shipped in crates. When it resurfaced in the public at an auction in 2000 the enthusiasm was so high it reached a sales price of $3.24 million. Another prize possession is a Mustang, designed by Carroll Shelby, that bears his signature on the dashboard. This was his personal vehicle and is part of a series he designed that eventually became known as the Shelby Mustangs.

Seeing as how dinosaurs once lived in this part of the country, it’s fitting there are fossils on display. You can also take a curated dinosaur hike in the surrounding mountains which shows you ancient footprints and other proof of their existence embedded in the rock.
