Mexican hotelier and architect Carlos Gosselin Maurel is ready to part ways with the waterfront dream home he built for himself and his wife nearly 30 years ago in Miami Beach’s Star Island. The 14,268-square-foot mansion, christened Casa la Bonita as a tribute to his spouse Elisa, recently hit the market for $30 million, nearly 29 times more what Maurel paid for the property in 1992.
According to the listing, the Mediterranean/Spanish-style estate at 14 Star Island is situated on a sprawling 40,000-square-foot lot with 100 feet of water frontage overlooking Biscayne Bay and the Port of Miami. The two-story house with six bedrooms and eight bathrooms has century-old Chinese doors, custom-made Hindu doors and a stately entrance gated imported from England. Other features include imported Italian marble floors, a movie theater, elevator, poolside gazebo and hurricane impact windows.
The Star Island house is the second property Maurel dedicated to Elisa. He also developed Paraiso de la Bonita, a 90-suite luxury hotel off the Yucatan coast nestled on 5.5 acres of beachfront.

According to Douglas Elliman Q3 2019 market report, the average price for luxury single family homes in Miami Beach was $15.5 million, up 32% from the same period last year. The average price per square foot was $1,596. Maurel is seeking $2,102 per square foot. For comparison, an 11,117-square-foot house at 23 Star Island sold in March at $2,248 per square foot.
In Q3, 11 luxury homes sold in Miami Beach with an average of 231 days on the market. Currently there are 140 active listings, representing 38 months of supply, which has gone down 19.6% compared to Q3 2018.
