Actress and dancer Jenna Dewan is having a very busy 2020! The mother of one just revealed she is pregnant for the second time with boyfriend Steve Kazee. The couple also recently moved into a new home together—a sprawling 7000 square foot modern abode in Los Angeles.
The most surprising thing about the space isn’t how beautiful it looks, but rather how accessible high style can be. It was designed by Erin Featherston in collaboration with AllModern, which is a division of Wayfair and a leading e-tailer for modern furniture and accessories across a variety of price points. As part of this partnership, AllModern curated a shop so fans can easily purchase their favorite pieces.
Featherston loved working with the brand because they really streamline the process. “AllModern has the most amazing selection of furniture that it’s like shopping across twenty different boutiques and I personally love their list and styling tools that allow you to visualize all the pieces together.”
However, while the home is stunning, decorating it wasn’t without challenges, the most notable being that Dewan and Kazee don’t own it. “This home is a rental,” notes Featherston. “So we weren’t able to make many changes to the interior design of the home. It would have been fun to explore alternative finishes and fixtures to tie the whole vision together.”
Another challenge was combining both the partner’s style into something everyone would like and enjoy. While Dewan describes her interior design taste as warm, calm and chic, she reveals her boyfriend has different ideas. “Steve likes a more minimalistic look and has amazing taste. I tend to go more feminine and mystical in my tastes, but we easily found a happy medium.”
One of Dewan’s most important priorities was making every room equally comfortable and put together. She already has a six-year-old daughter, Everly from her previous marriage to Channing Tatum. So everyone will likely be spending a lot of time in the living room and family room once the new baby arrives. “Clean comfort is key,” she says. “A great couch to lay on with the kiddos, as well as comfortable chairs that are also easy to clean.”
Another kid-friendly favorite is the coffee table which has round edges, making it far less anxiety-provoking than a typical sharp-edged rectangular piece.
Like many homes in the Los Angeles area, Dewan’s is designed for indoor and outdoor living. So Featherston picked pieces that would help to create a feeling of seamlessness. “I wanted to bring the outdoors in through an earthy color palette, like the moss green velvet Bobby Berk for A.R.T. Furniture in the living room,” the designer says. “With all the windows, the eye has a seamless experience transitioning from inside the home to the views beyond.”
For Featherston, flow and creating an ambiance are key. “In Jenna’s case, they wanted the home to be as cozy as possible so I wanted to create areas throughout the home to foster intimacy and togetherness,” she says.
The designer also emphasizes the importance of being very intentional with every single piece of furniture and decorative object, both big and small. “Every item should serve a purpose, visual, functional, or emotional. I’m a strict editor when it comes to miscellaneous objects.”
Sheepskin rugs are a great example of this. “They always look good, it’s just about finding the right spot for them.” Featherston chose the Colello Handmade Sheepskin Natural Area Rug for the dining room, but it could work in any space. And at a price under $70, it’s a perfect fit for any home in Hollywood or beyond.
