Jason Witten Lists $4.6 Texas Home As Vegas Calls His Name

Former Dallas Cowboy’s star tight Jason Witten left the Dallas Cowboys in March and signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Las Vegas Raiders: their gain, our loss. He wasted no time in getting his football-field lot-sized, stunning Mediterranean mansion on the market in sprawling Westlake, Texas. The estate is located in that exclusive, guard-gated community of multi-million dollar mansions called Vaquero.

Vaquero is home to Glenn Beck (whose home is still on the market, albeit reduced), Rex Tillerson (he bought Vernon Wells’ estate), and a star-studded list of alums who have since moved away including the Jonas brothers, the family rock band; professional athletes including one-time Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton and first baseman Mark Teixeira; business leaders, such as the CEO of Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Matthew Rose. PGA golfers Justin Leonard and Brandt Jobe; former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Drew Bledsoe; golf instructor Hank Haney; FOX NFL Sunday Terry Bradshaw. Even Sean Payton, head coach of the New Orleans Saints, lived in Vaquero and commuted to NOLA after buying a 7800 square foot house with a disco for the kids. 

“I do a lot of business in that community that doesn’t even go into MLS,” says Southlake-based listing agent Roxann Taylor of Engel & Voelkers. “And I won’t tell you who all lives there. Many NFL stars move to Vaquero for security.”

Witten, says Taylor, had lived nearby, but fans kept climbing, and destroying, the stone fence around his family’s previous home. That’s when Taylor moved them all to Vaquero in 2005.

Vaquero is a 525 acre master planned development by Discovery DISCA Land Company. It was once the Hunt’s Circle T Ranch, who sold it to Ross Perot Jr., who sold to Discovery. Vaquero is seriously gated and offers membership in the newly-remodelled 28,000-square-foot Vaquero Club, a Hill Country-esque clubhouse with a killer Tom Fazio golf course, available only to property owners. The Vaquero Club recently ousted its CFO amid a $5.4 million deficit.

Forbes has frequently named the town of almost 1,500 one of the most affluent neighborhood in the country.

The home on 1.2 rolling acres sports a fortune of stone-covered walls encompassing 8841 total square feet with six bedrooms, six full bathrooms, two powders, an 828 square foot guest house with full kitchen and private patio the Wittens built, double decked pool with spa (top deck is a spa flowing to a lagoon pool spilling to a diving pool), waterfall and water slide, and playrooms, as in plural.

“There are so many entertainment areas on the first floor,” says Taylor. “The media room is flanked by a playroom on one side, a gameroom on the other. The master has a large sitting room. Three full bedroom suites are upstairs connected by a common room.

The home, designed in appealing neutral and white-washed transitional tones, is listed for $4.685 million. And talk about private! The home even has the premium power of being on a corner cul de sac.

With the manicured drive-up appeal that is de rigeur for Vaquero, mature landscaping bathes the home and dramatizes the entrance. Open the double doors to a massive two-story grand salon/great room that separates the master wing from all major living spaces. The master suite and a guest room are downstairs, along with the gameroom, media centers, kitchen, study, wine cellar/wet bar, and family rooms. Three bedroom suites are upstairs. There is not a bad view in the home.

“The home is decorated nicely, with lots of Michelle Witten’s touches. I was showing it yesterday afternoon to another NFL player and he said, ‘oh my gosh this home looks like Michelle!’” says Taylor. “She did about 70% of the design work, and the builder, Scott Simmons Custom Homes, helped them remodel when they moved in.”

The kitchen is commensurate in size and is a vision of white wash, with gourmet appliances and oodles of storage. There is a walk-through wine cellar and entertainment friendly wet bar on the way to the study. In back is a column-lined patio and complete outdoor kitchen, al fresco dining area, all overlooking the massive pool and grounds.

Witten, 37, spent 15 seasons with the Cowboys and retired to become an analyst with ESPN’s Monday Night Football. Then he returned to the team for one more season in 2019. Throughout his career he racked up 1,215 receptions, most in Cowboy’s team history and fourth-most all-time. His deal with the Raiders is for one year. Who knows, maybe he’ll be back!
