The job of facilitating someone’s largest purchase and lifelong aspiration is no easy task. As real estate agents, we are given the responsibility of assisting in a life-changing decision for our buyers and sellers. That role can bring stress, emotion and financial impact for years to come.

And as many agents know, your time spent in the classroom is much different from time out in the field. In just a matter of months, you can go from dreaming of your real estate career to holding a license and helping a complete stranger with their most expensive purchase to date. I want to share four tips for helping to boost your confidence as a real estate agent, as this responsibility can be overwhelming.

1. Affirmations

I use affirmations daily. Affirmations are sentences designed to impact the conscious and subconscious mind, that affect our behavior and habits. An affirmation is a statement that we repeat aloud to motivate and influence. When you repeat a positive phrase about yourself, it can affirm your self-worth, put you in a positive mindset and also boost your confidence. There is MRI evidence suggesting when self-affirmation tasks are performed, there is increased activity in the brain’s self-processing and valuation regions.

Real estate agents could repeat the following sentences aloud: “I am a dedicated real estate agent,” “I am knowledgeable about the housing market,” “I close deals easily,” or “I grow my real estate business every day.”

2. Coaching

For many agents, real estate is a second or third career. And I bet a majority of agents were not all excellent salespeople or top marketers in their former job role. I’m not excluded from those descriptions, and I’ve had three coaches at different times in my life to help guide me.

A coach can bring their experience to the table, which can save you time and money in the long run. A coach can also help give you unbiased answers that you cannot get from an agent who is a friend or from an agent competing with you for the same neighborhood. When you have a coach behind you, this can also help keep you motivated to stay on task and be accountable for your goals.
