Crate And Barrel And HGTV’s Leanne Ford Launch Limited Editon Collaboration

Leanne Ford can do no wrong. Today, it was announced that the star of HGTV’s hit show Restored By The Fords is launching a collaboration with Crate and Barrel. Available now, the collection features a unique range of furniture and home accents designed with Ford’s signature modern, yet warm aesthetic. Both old and new fans of Ford as well as Crate and Barrel in general, will be very excited.

“We’ve always been such fans of Leanne’s design work, as she’s helping redefine American interior style, and we felt her aesthetic would be a natural fit for the Crate and Barrel brand,” Vice President of Product Design and Development, Sebastian Brauer tells me. 

“We took a trip out to her home in Los Angeles where we had an energizing and creative conversation, and we immediately felt the chemistry. This dynamic was present throughout the whole collaborative process, which was a constant visual dialogue. The passion for design and admiration for each other’s work was mutual and allowed us to create this beautiful collection,” he says.

I recently spoke with Ford to learn about her design process, what her favorite pieces are and what the future holds.

How would you describe the collection?

The collection features a modern take on classic materials. We used natural elements, simple wood, cane, linens, ceramics and more to create that contemporary, yet classic feeling. 

I tend to design with one foot in the past and one eye on the future, which you can definitely feel through the collection we created together. The line is chic but still joyful and happy. It’s intimate, cozy and comfortable, but remains elevated. There’s a certain hint of combining masculine and feminine touches, and there’s always a touch of Wabi-Sabi combined with a Mediterranean sensibility in my work expressed through materials and colors—it’s perfectly imperfect. 

How did you design each piece?

I set out to design all of the pieces I wished existed or wished were easier to find. As an interior designer, I am always looking for special furniture to fit in many different styles of homes. By keeping the color story consistent and neutral, we were able to create a line that could transcend one style of home and stand the test of time. 

What is it like to design furniture and accessories, as opposed to an entire home?

I tend to design everything as an editorial story. I make sure the entire home has recurring themes and materials that are consistent throughout, so as a whole everything visually lives well together. 

I naturally did the same when designing this line with the Crate and Barrel team. I used recurring materials, shapes and neutral colors throughout to ensure all of the pieces work seamlessly together. My vision was to create pieces that were strong enough to stand on their own, but simple enough to work together.

Do you have any styling tips?

We created a line that is totally interchangeable from piece to piece, so you can’t go wrong mixing and matching, which was important to me as an interior designer. We wanted to create a fail-proof collection with versatile pieces.

The Primitive Geo Vases double as candlestick holders, the raised bowls add an architectural element to any room, and the candles create an ambiance reminiscent of a night around the fire. I also love the idea of putting one of the hurricane vessels in the weaved baskets to create an oversized vase or moody lantern. 

For bedding, keep it simple! There’s nothing better than a beautiful, simple bed so for this collection we didn’t add patterns or designs on any of the bedding. We wanted to make simple, plush and crispy sheets and duvets that could all live together. It’s all about how the bedding feels, so I was extremely hands-on to make sure this bedding felt perfect—like your dream hotel sheets. 

I also love layering rugs—it creates some depth to your room and warmth to the space. 

What do you consider the must-have pieces?

The under-stuffed pillows and simple lines of the slipcovered sofa create a warm, comfortable living space—an almost barefoot glamour element. 

For the art, we collaborated with my great friend Alexandra Valenti to create beautiful collage elements that elevate any space. We added a modern touch to my favorite sisal rugs by dying them beautiful shades of black and sumac, and adding natural fringe. 

The dining chairs are also very special and can live on their own as side chairs in smaller spaces. I really can’t wait to see all of these pieces in peoples’ homes and how they chose to design with them!

What’s next for you?

All I can say is…a lot! I am going to continue to create and design in every form. We are also about to start filming season three of our show on HGTV, and I have a few more fun projects up my sleeve. I love being able to create for a living!
