Here’s what you need to know…
Even for the savviest of travelers, the journey to Antarctica is anything but easy. Best case scenario you’re talking multiple flights and then there’s the infamous Drake Passage. But once you’re there, electric blue icebergs piercing through cobalt colored water and an entire continent dotted with hundreds of thousands of waddling penguins awaits you. It’s a bucket list destination like none other, however unlike other places, traveling to Antarctica takes a fair amount of coordinating.
This week Airbnb is making that process a whole lot easier. Earlier this week, the online home-sharing company in conjunction with D.C based non-profit Ocean Conservancy announced it’s accepting submissions to send five lucky volunteers to Antarctica for free where they will join Antarctic Scientist Kirstie Jones-Williams for a scientific research mission in December.
The mission, dubbed Antarctic Sabbatical is an all-expenses paid “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to journey to the frozen frontier and help us better understand humans’ environmental impact,” according to a press release from Airbnb. The month-long journey which departs November 18-December 16, will include everything from collecting snow samples from the interior of Antarctica to study microplastics that have made their way to the interior of Antarctica and a visit to the South Pole to exploring the beauty of Antarctic sites like the Drake Icefall, Charles Peak Windscoop, and Elephant’s Head to learn about the icy continent’s geography.
In addition to being in possession of a valid passport (and having availability to travel for a month during the trip dates) the prompt is relatively straight forward: Why do you want to travel to Antarctica and what excites you about this expedition?
Interested applicants should submit their answers here through Tuesday, October 8 at 11:50 p.m. EDT. Good luck, and don’t forget your hand warmers if you win.
