A new listing at The Manhattan House, a building made famous for being home to Grace Kelly in the 1950s, has come on the market for $6.495 million. Belonging to David A. Sackler, the 4-bedroom, 5-bathroom unit measures just over 3,300 square feet overlooking the Lenox Hill neighborhood of Manhattan. The Sackler family business is Purdue Pharma. In 2016 Forbes estimated the Sackler’s had a built collective fortune of $13 billion largely from sales of the controversial opioid OxyContinForbes’ most recent estimate of their net worth is $13 billion making them #19 on the list of America’s Wealthiest Families. The agents declined to comment on whether the timing of the sale is related to the recent controversies over OxyContin.

Grace Kelly, who had been resident in the building during the 1950s, was almost destined to live there since her father, John B. Kelly Sr., founded Kelly for Brickwork which is believed to have been the subcontractor responsible for the brickwork and construction of the building’s exterior walls. The building achieved landmark status in 2017 for its mid-century modern architecture and still retains the whitewashed, unadorned facade. It also contains a one-acre private garden, one of the largest in New York City, with two sculptures by Dutch-born artist Hans Van de Bovenkamp.

Inside the unit the living room and dining room combine for a total of 48 feet of space, with a custom-made floor-to-ceiling fireplace set inside a dividing wall with doorway openings on either side. Above is the dining room side with a more formal seating area on one side of the two-sided fireplace and below is the more casual living room. The grey oak floors are also on display in this photo.
